Apple's U.S. carrier partners begin selling out of iPhone 5 pre-orders

Not only did Apple sell out of its online pre-order stock - in an hour, no less - its carrier partners are seeing the same thing happen as Friday continues to unfold.

As of 2:30 p.m. PDT on Friday, Verizon's site shows a wait of an extra week for those pre-ordering. The site says any orders now placed will arrive on Sept. 28.

Meanwhile, Sprint's site shows an up to two week wait for the 16GB model, but still shows a Sept. 21 launch day date for the 32GB and 64GB models. It is only a matter of time before the 32GB and 64GB models sell out, as well.

AT&T, finally, shows that the device will ship to a customer's hot little hands in 14-21 business days.

Those who absolutely must have the iPhone 5 on Sept. 21 and end up missing out on pre-ordering can still buy on retail launch day by going to a retail location. Apple will opening retail stores at 8 a.m. that day, but you can expect lines. Verizon, AT&T and Sprint stores will have in-store availability of the iPhone 5 as well on that day, and perhaps other locations such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart.

Best Buy is currently offering in-store pre-orders. So, for the first time, is big-box retailer Wal-Mart.

Apple, carrier stores open at 8AM on September 21st for iPhone 5 sales, early pre-order tallies are 'incredible'

Apple, carrier stores open at 8AM on September 21st for iPhone 5 sales, early preorder tallies are 'incredible'

Apple regularly likes to kickstart major launches with early retail openings, and it's just confirmed that the natural order of things is intact: both its own stores as well as those for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon will open at 8AM local time on September 21st to take iPhone 5 sales from anyone who missed out on the pre-order rush. As for how well those pre-orders have gone so far? Apple's statement on the subject doesn't give us concrete numbers at this stage, but it certainly hints at an upbeat outlook:

"Pre-orders for iPhone 5 have been incredible," said Apple spokeswoman, Natalie Kerris. "We've been completely blown away by the customer response."

iPhone 5 bill of materials estimated to be $167.50

The new iPhone 5 has all the bells and whistles that consumers were clamoring for last year, but has that extra year saved Apple some money? According of a provisional estimate of pricing from UBM TechInsights, the new iPhone has a bill of materials totaling $167.50. That’s not bad when you consider the iPhone 4S was estimated to cost $188 at launch.

This analysis is being done before the device has landed in the hands of anyone reckless enough to take it apart, mind you. UBM used the announced specs and chip branding, along with previous bills of materials to work out what the components are likely to cost. Some of the more pricey parts include the processor ($28), the radios ($25), and the display ($18).

bom

When compared to the current cost of building the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 is quite a bit more expensive. The 4S bill of materials is down to $132 after a year of price reductions. All these analyses were done assuming a 16GB version of the device by the way.

When the device is released, firms like iSupply will surely crack the phone open to get a closer look at the exact chips being used. At that time, we’ll have a more exact estimate of the component cost. The 16GB iPhone 5 is going to be selling for $200 with a new 2-year contract, just like past iPhones have done. However, that’s not the full retail value. Unsubsidized iPhones start at $649.99. Even when you factor in manufacturing costs, that’s still quite a markup.

iPhone 5 Delivery Date Rises To 2 Weeks

NEW YORK (AP) — Delivery times climbed quickly as Apple Inc. started taking orders for the iPhone 5 on Friday, suggesting strong demand.

Apple began taking orders for the phone at 12 a.m. Pacific time, promising delivery by next Friday, when the new phone also goes on sale in stores.

Four hours later, the expected delivery time had grown to two weeks, according to Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White.

White said the quick rise in the expected delivery time suggests much stronger demand than Apple expected. Last year, one-week delivery of the iPhone 4S was available into the afternoon of the first order day.

"Clearly, iPhone 5 fever is in full swing," White said.

AT&T and Sprint was still promising delivery by next Friday, while Verizon Wireless was promising delivery on Sept. 26.

Apple's stock rose $12.98, or 1.9 percent, to $695.96 in midday trading, hitting an all-time high.

iPhone 5 sells out in an hour, find out the good the bad and the ugly (Video)

Apple finally began taking iPhone 5 online pre-orders a 3:01 a.m. EST today and sold out within an hour, according to The Washington Post. Shipping estimates are now indicating a two week wait, but some of the individual carriers were still giving a ship date of Sept. 21. The iPhone 5 sell-out is fairly impressive and is the largest, fastest iPhone rollout in Apple’s history. Many are weighing in today on what they’ve found so far to be the best and worst things about the newest iPhone.

There could be many reasons people are clamoring to get their hands on the latest iPhone incarnation, of course uppermost may just be that they can.

"I think it's demand," said Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets, of the fast sell-out. "Apple wouldn't want to upset customers by running out in just an hour", according to Computerworld. The company rolled out to nine countries versus seven for the last time, and if they had concerns over meeting sales, they’d have reduced the rollout instead.

Only time and use will tell the true story of how successful the new iPhone 5 will be, but many are offering up their initial reviews already.

Hayley Tsukayama writes in the Post that, “The iconic smartphone has been redesigned with a series of small changes that are supposed to add up to a new gadget that feels familiar but evolved”. The new version also 20 percent lighter and 18 percent thinner.

The larger four inch screen shows a fifth row of apps on the home screen. Its width is unchanged for ease of use thumb wise, but the extra length means a new case, and it won’t fit in some pockets that an earlier iPhones did.

The new screen has a finer quality which is aimed at making colors pop more while retaining the “retina display” of the iPhone 4S. Also Apple improved the phone’s camera sensor so you’ll look better in phone photos regardless of the better screen.

The new iPhone 5 has an A6 chip which is supposed to run twice as fast as the updated A5 chip found in the iPhone 4S. So far reviewers appear to be backing that claim up. This is good for mobile gamers.

The iPhone 5 is 4G LTE capable, so it will officially operate on what the most people consider true fourth-generation networks. That’s good, but you’ll want to watch your data consumption since those faster speeds will make it much easier to lose track of you’re data consumption. You’ll want to check to see if you’re in an LTE area before you come to expect those faster speeds.

The new dock connector is part good, part bad. It renders many of the old accessories obsolete, but it’s supposed to have faster transfer speeds and is a big part of what makes the phone smaller and lighter. Apple is selling an adapter for $29, which will work with some but not all existing accessories.

The expense factor can’t be ignored. Apple has been reducing the price of the iPhone over the years. It first sold for $499 with 4GB. The iPhone 5 is still an expensive purchase starting at $199 and up. There are cheaper premium smartphones out there such as Android phones, Windows phones and even the iPhone 4S is selling for $99 or less. The iPhone 5 is particularly expensive if you have to break your current contract to get the upgrade.

For some it just may be good to wait a little while and let any bugs shake out. Remember antenna-gate? Or it could be battery life problems and other possible ones that Apple may want to address with later updates.

There is no single killer feature that you need to have now that isn’t in the iPhone 4S. Get it if it’s important to have the latest and greatest, otherwise never fear, a new iPhone will be out before you know it.

iPhone 5 costs estimated $168 to make, sells for $649

The 16GB iPhone 5, the least expensive of Apple’s new smartphone models, costs $167.50 to manufacture, according to an analysis by UBM Tech Insights.

Tech Insights estimates the iPhone 5 costs about $35 more than the iPhone 4S to make. The most expensive competent is the new A6 processor, which costs $28. The second-most expensive item is the Qualcomm 4G LTE modem, which runs $25.

While it’s a bit more expensive to make than the last model, Apple will still be collecting plenty of cash on the sale of iPhone 5 units. When a wireless carrier isn’t paying for a portion of the device, the 16GB iPhone 5 costs $649. With a wireless carrier subsidizing the cost, it costs $199 but you’re tied to 2-year contract.

The cost difference between the $167.50 materials bill and the $649 sales price is $481.50. While some of that money goes into paying for Apple’s operations and marketing, it still makes a hefty profit. Apple collected $8.8 billion in net income last quarter alone.

Apple debuted the hugely anticipated iPhone 5 Wednesday and pre-orders for the device started today. Pre-orders from Apple already have a two-week shipping estimate, and the carriers are about the same with their estimates, indicating huge demand.

Reviewer Has Sex With His iPhone 5 (NSFW)

The iPhone 5 is longer, it has a smaller port, and some people think it's boring. But you can't really form an opinion on a prestige piece of hardware like this until you've had sex with it.

In the (very funny, sort of explicit, NSFW) iPhone review parody below, one reviewer gets right down to the business and gets it on with his phone. Honestly, this is still less nauseating than how most of the actual reviews will read:

iPhone 5 Pre-Order Batch Reportedly Sold Out In 1 Hour

If you want that shiny new iPhone 5 as soon as possible, then grab your folding chair and an umbrella, because you may have to wait in a long line outside the Apple Store.

According to Business Insider, about one hour after the iPhone 5 pre-orders were made available to the public (at 12:01 a.m. PT on September 14), the entire stock was sold out. Shipping estimates on the company's site now currently say it will take at least two weeks to deliver phones in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and Germany.

While some lucky Apple enthusiasts quickly ordered their devices, this morning's purchasing process had a few glitches. CNN reports that heavy traffic on Apple's website led to the damning "We'll be back" sign, which inevitably frustrated the sleepy internet and Twittersphere.

Some smartphone users found a loophole and were able to bypass Apple's overwhelmed website and place orders via the Apple Store's iOS app. According to CNET, "buying options went live immediately after midnight" via the app.

MacRumors suggests that customers "may still be able to receive launch-day delivery" (September 21) by ordering though AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint. But the Apple-obsessed site also gives one final caveat to expecting iPhone 5 owners: the 9/21 delivery date from listed on the carriers' sites may not "immediately reflect available stock."

Yikes.

So back to square one: If you weren't one of the lucky few who could access the Apple Store last night, and you're concerned cellphone carriers won't make good on the promised release date, then prepare to wait a few weeks or camp in front of an Apple Store.

Never have pre-orders for a new iPhone sold out within one hour. TechCruch notes that the iPhone 4 pre-orders sold out in 20 hours, while the iPhone 4S pre-orders sold out in 22 hours, meaning the iPhone 5 sold out a whopping 20x faster than its predecessors.

Were you successfully able to pre-order the iPhone 5 last night? Let us know how it went for you in the comments section, or tweet us at [@HuffPostTech]. If you're still on the fence about the new iPhone, take a look at our chart to see how it compares to top competitors like the Galaxy S3 and the Lumia 920; and view our gallery of the 7 things the iPhone 5 has that the iPhone 4S doesn't.

Sold Out! iPhone 5 Sales Shut Down Apple Pre-Order

Early iPhone 5 sales are living up to even the loftiest expectations, with iPhone 5 pre-orders getting pushed back a week due to massive consumer demand.

Last year, you’ll recall an oft-cited survey that predicted that the 35% of consumers would own an iPhone 5. That 35% wasn’t qualified by “smartphone users” or “Apple enthusiasts,” or any other limiting demographic — it stated that 35% of all consumers would own what would eventually be the iPhone 5. If Apple’s own market research revealed the same findings, it’s no wonder they named their sixth generation iPhone “iPhone 5.”

but if you thought those early sales estimates were little more than economic hyperbole, guess again — right out of the gate, iPhone 5 is living up to the sales hype. Cue the hand-shaking andy grins on Wall Street — another big Apple earnings report is on its way.

According to reports, it only took an hour to drain iPhone 5 reserves set aside for the pre-order sales period. From Computerworld:

“Apple today exhausted its supply of the iPhone 5 within an hour of opening its online store for pre-orders, and now is telling customers that their orders won’t ship for two weeks.

AT&T, Sprint and Verizon still showed a Sept. 21 delivery date for new orders as of 11 a.m. ET, however.”

It’s possible that the moved-up release iPhone 5 — almost a month prior to the 4S in 2011 — could have played a slight part in the new iPhone selling out so quickly, since Cupertino perhaps had one less month to amass iPhone 5 units. But selling out in an hour suggests that even an extra month’s lead time wouldn’t have made much of a difference.

What these sales demonstrate is that the voice of dissent regarding the iPhone 5 is a minority voice at this point. Another worthy note is that, in the end, Sprint managed to get its act together in order to have their version of the iPhone 5 release alongside AT&T and Verizon. today, I was reading an article on CNET today that made the point: “For iPhone 5, it may be cheaper to jump carriers than upgrade.” One wonders if Sprint could benefit from a strategy like that?   By Michael Nace
