iPhone 5 release date rumor: Supply shortage could make new Apple iPhone 5 rare

In an ongoing tradition, a new iPhone 5 release date rumor indicates that the newest Apple smartphone could see supply shortages, leading to a very hard to find tech device. This has been the speculation every instance when Apple has launched a new iPhone, so it would make sense that it would pop up ahead of the latest release.

As reported by BGR via Yahoo! News on Wednesday, several "unnamed sources" from Apple's Eastern supply chain are saying the new iPhones could be in short supply, to the tune of 25% less than needed. Shipments are expected to fall from 20 million units to less than 15 million units due to "unforeseen challenges." These issues are rumored to be caused by the use of the new in-cell touchscreen technology that Apple is integrating into the new iPhone 5.

The Digitimes website reported:

"Issues related to the poor yields of in-cell panels have been cited previously as possibly disrupting Apple's shipping schedule for new iPhones. The latest rumors indicate that Apple has recently redesigned a connector at the bottom of the new iPhone and that yield rates of the new connectors at Foxconn International Holdings (FIH) have been low due in part to insufficient supply of some key materials."

The website goes on to say the short supply will make the product even more in demand for the fourth quarter, or first half of 2013. While these are merely rumors right now, it is certainly expected that the new Apple iPhone 5 will be the hot tech item for the end of 2012. As for its release date, expect the announcement on September 12th, with a pre-order on the same day, and the actual product available on the 21st.
