In case you missed it this weekend, more iPhone 5 (OK, yes, it’s technically the sixth iPhone, but we’re sticking with iPhone 5 for now) component images have leaked out. This time we get a glimpse at the front cover assembly of the iPhone 5.
In past iPhone 5 rumors we’ve seen nano SIM cards, the handset’s metal chassis, the logic board, a mini docking port, and any number of other components. Now we get a close look at the front of the phone, including the aperture for the home button, the 4-inch, 16:9 display, and spots for the proximity sensor, speaker, and front-facing camera. On the backside of the panel there is little to see aside from a few QR codes and the assembly above the display which holds the camera, proximity sensor, and GPS receiver. This image isn’t too revealing, but it gives us the best look we’ve seen so far at these lesser components (or at least the placements for them).
Most notably, this image one again acts to confirm the next iPhone’s new aspect ratio. A few moments in Photoshop reveals that the ratio of the top of the display to the side is right about 16:9 (you’ll have the fudge the numbers a little bit to account for the perspective). This should put the new iPhone at the 640×1136 resolution that people have been predicting for the past few weeks. This resolution would mean a change in the shape of the display, but compatibility with iOS 5 (and previous) apps, Retina display-level pixel density, and no letter boxing on HD video.
The next iPhone — whether it’s called the iPhone 5 or not — is likely less than a month away. Current rumors are pointing towards an announcement around September 12th and a release date 9 days later.
