The iPhone 5 has already sold out, at least if you want delivery direct from Apple on launch day, Sept. 21, 2012. Only an hour after pre-orders for the iPhone 5 went live at 12:01 a.m. on Friday morning, Apple Store shipping estimates for new pre-orders lengthened to a rather vague "two weeks" in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Germany, and Australia.

However, notably, on Friday morning, it was still possible to pre-order from the websites of Verizon, AT&T and Sprint with delivery still estimated for Sept. 21. That is not going to last long, however.
Although Japan and Hong Kong are listed as countries in the first wave of iPhone 5s, customers in those countries cannot preorder the device and will have to wait for general availability on Sept. 21.
Those who absolutely must have the iPhone 5 on Sept. 21 and end up missing out on pre-ordering can still buy on retail launch day by going to a retail location. Apple will opening retail stores at 8 a.m. that day, but you can expect lines. Verizon, AT&T and Sprint stores will have in-store availability of the iPhone 5 as well on that day, and perhaps other locations such as Best Buy.
In 2011, the retail stock of the iPhone 4S was depleted in about 22 hours.
iPhone 5 pricing starts at $199 (on contract) and $649 without subsidy. The device is Apple’s thinnest iPhone ever, at 7.6 mm thick, 18 percent thinner than the iPhone 4S. It comes in weighing 112 grams, or 20 percent lighter.
The new device sports the same 326 PPI Retina display, but in a larger 4-inch display with a new 16:9 aspect ration and an 1,136 x 640 resolution. The new aspect ratio means that apps that are not optimized for the new aspect ratio will show up as letter-boxed in portrait mode and pillar-boxed in landscape mode.
It also sports a new A6 processor, improved 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 720p FaceTime camera, LTE, and a new smaller (and controversial) dock connector Apple calls Lightning.
