iPhone 5 preorders went live yesterday morning, September 14. According to a report by Techcrunch, Apple sold out of their preorder stock within 60 minutes. That is 20 times faster than the iPhone 4S, which took about 22 hours to reach this mark.
The cell carriers, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint maintained stock well into the morning. However, much of their preorder supply dwindled before the evening. Verizon was the first to show a later ship date.
Each carrier still displays the iPhone 5 on their main page with a dominant preorder button. As of early on September 15, going through the steps to preorder indicated the following times for delivery:
- Apple - 2-3 weeks
- AT&T - 14-21 business days
- Verizon - deliver by 10/5
- Sprint - 9/21 for all models except 16GB, which ships in 2 weeks
Though high preorder volumes were expected, even Apple was blown away at the demand. According to a statement provided to AllThingsD, Apple spokeswoman Nat Kerris told shared, “We’ve been completely blown away by the customer response.”
If you didn’t get in your request, you can still find a new iPhone on the release date by visiting Apple, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint stores beginning at 8 a.m. on September 21. Given the demand for preorders, camping gear may be a wise investment between now and then. I’ll be sure to take pictures of local Apple stores in Nashville as the date draws near.
