As it turns out, virtually everything that we had heard rumored about the iPhone 5 turned out to be true — including the early leaked photos of its now elongated screen and metal-backed form factor. Say hello to the iPhone 5, which still doesn’t look all that dissimilar from the iPhone 4 and 4S.
Apple CEO Tim Cook led with the three most contentious and anticipated features on the new iPhone: its name, its fr factor, and its screen size. For many tech purists, the choice of calling the sixth generation iPhone “iPhone 5 will come as a surprise, but for marketing pragmatists who know the value of that series name, it’s no shocker.
Perhaps more shocking is that the iPhone 5 is indeed the iPhone we saw all summer long turned out to be the case. For many who yearned for a larger screen, you got one — albeit longer and not wider. The new screen on iPhone 5 is a 4-inch retina display. 1136×640. And Mr. Cook went out of his way to say that “All your software works just like before,” meaning that Apple apparently took care of any fragmenting app issues.
The display also turned out to be of the in-cell variety, and Tim Cook focused heavily on new resolution and video-viewing capability. It appears that the choice to make the screen longer had much to do with the viewing of videos and media.
The iPhone 5 delivered on the form factor promises for the most part as well. It’s just 7.6mm thin, making it 18% thinner. “It’s the world’s thinnest smartphone,” Cook boasted. As we all know, “going thin” is a popular move for Apple design. In addition, the new iPhone is a combination of glass and aluminum. The rumored LiquidMetal alloy was not used on this iteration.
Wondering about 4G? Well, the iPhone 5 is LTE as well. It features a single radio design with a dynamic antenna, allow Apple to deal with the complexitites of designing a 4G iPhone 5 that can work across a wide range of worldwide networks, featuring a dual-channel 5GHz, with max performance up to 150Mbps.
The famed A6 chip also made it onto the iPhone 5 as well, promising an ultra-fast processing powerhouse, which will be needed for the retina display and LITE. Simply put, the CPU and GPU are two times faster than the A5.
Even the battery rumors turned out to be true. There was concern that Apple would do little improve the battery pack from the iPhone 4S, and that’s exactly what they did (or didn’t do). “We’ve matched or exceeded the battery life of the iPhone 4S,” Cook said. It will come across to many iPhone 4S as an odd detail to boast about, considering that the iPhone 4S has had battery iusues.
For those photo enthusiasts, Apple made its customary improvements to the camera components, which of course complemented the device’s impressive new screen and resolution. Low light enhancements and fine tuning of a crystal lens promise to deliver even more stunning photos, to be sure. Connected to this, Facetime is now officially untethered from wifi, with the front-facing camera now HD.
Finally, the dreaded dock connector: It was long rumored that the dock connector would get an overhaul, and it did. All all-digital, 8 signal design now replaces the clunky, old 30-pin variety, and Apple even has an equally clunky adaptor that users can use on accessories that use the previous connection.
The Apple team also rolled out a ton of new iOS 6-related features — enough to cover in a longer, more in-depth article. Notably absent was NFC/iWallet and the ability to pay with your iPhone 5. But in the end, hardware ruled the day with the new iPhone, just as last year, Apple leaned on new software. It will be interesting to see how people react to the fact that the iPhone 5 seen for months in the rumor is exactly what they got
