Forget the iPhone 5: The GooPhone i5 clone is coming in September

For a lot of people the upcoming iPhone 5 is the only way to go for a new smartphone, but for the brave of heart an alternative lookalike “iPhone 5” device will be released in China named the GooPhone i5.

GooPhone?
We’re not sure about how great sounding the name GooPhone is, but the China-based manufacturer of the device has already sent in patents for its design, based upon leaked product photos of Apple’s next iPhone. The GooPhone i5 will have the look and feel of an iPhone 5 but will be running an Android operating system.

Specs
The GooPhone will be running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, with 1GB of RAM, a 4-inch “retina” display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, and powered by a 1.4GHz quad-core Tegra processor.

Will the device last? That’s hard to say, as some clones of original devices have very bad track records, while other cloned products perform very well.

The release date for the GooPhone is slated for late September. No price has been announced.

Legal stuff
It’s obvious that this outright copying of Apple’s iPhone design is illegal, but some see this as poetic justice against Apple, which has gone on a litigation frenzy trying to stop its competitors in its tracks with alleged patent infringement violations, and product bans.

But the GooPhone will probably survive, and although it may be a cheap knockoff of Apple’s iPhone 5, it could be seen as an in-your-face challenge to Apple’s legal team by saying:

“Go ahead, make my day...”
