iPhone 5 event: Apple invites media ahead of release date

Invitations for an iPhone 5 event, all but confirmed rumors that the Apple smart phone is on its way, with a release date likely within weeks. Amid a patent battle with Samsung, the Wednesday media gathering will likely be standing-room-only.

Tuesday afternoon, CNN updated readers on the breaking news about the event to be held at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater next week.

An iPhone 5 release date will likely be talked about along with the new features of the smart phone and an iPad Mini or the introduction of new iPods.

The new iPhone 5 is thought to include a larger screen to rival the Galaxy SIII, a new eight-pin connector (oh joy), an A6 quad-core processor (good luck with that), improved Siri, iOS 6 and of course...4G LTE technology (fingers crossed).

The iPhone 5 event will undoubtedly be closely watched by the brass over at Samsung. The Galaxy SIII and Note maker is entrenched in another round of patent litigation.

A jury recently awarded the iPhone 5 maker $1 billion in damages when it found Samsung intentionally copied trade designs. However, the defendant rolled up its sleeves and filed a counter-motion to ban sales of the iPhone 5 at its release date.

Furthermore, there were rumors Apple may nix or delay the launch until all legal matters are cleared up with Samsung regarding patent disputes.

The iPhone 5 event is likely to unveil the elusive smart phone, reveal its features and end with the green light for a release date with pre-orders. With so much at stake at this point, Apple is likely to roll the dice and deal with legal matters appropriately. Can you imagine the world without a sixth-generation iPhone this year?
