Is Too Much Information Taking The Joy Out Of The New iPhone Release?

With Apple expected to reveal the new iPhone tomorrow, some are expecting an anticlimactic debut, do to too much information having already leaked out.

Conservative talk radio stalwart and longtime Apple product enthusiast Rush Limbaugh says he’s hearing from a lot of iPhone fans who say they’re depressed about the new iPhone, Why? Because apparently everything is known about what it’s going to be, and that, says Rush, is like taking Santa Claus out of Christmas for people. Implicitly including him. In an earlier commentary, Rush said he’s one of these people who’s on the edge of his chair when we get close to the release of a new Apple product like an iPhone or an iPad. “Apple stuff is my Christmas morning,” he observed “That’s cool. I like being able to have that feeling at age 62.”

On the other hand, Appleinsider’s Neil Hughes cites Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White saying in a note to investors on Monday that he believes the iPhone 5 launch will be the biggest upgrade in the history of consumer electronics, even though a plethora of leaked parts and information over the past few months probably means mean there won’t be any big surprises.

GoSpotCheck thought it would be interesting to find out what happens when a consumer goes to buy a new iPhone less than a month before the rumored release of a new version.

How do retailers respond to the direct question: “Is a new iPhone going to be released soon?”
· “Yes, you should wait until the end of the month.” (52%)

· “Yes, but who knows when. I would buy now.” (38%)

· “No, I don’t think a new version is coming out. I’d buy now.” (10%)

Interestingly, GoSpotCheck’s consumer base found that AT&T’s sales reps were most open about telling shoppers to wait (66%), while Best Buy pushed consumers to buy now and not wait for the new release (17%). ON the other hand, Apple Store employees, in the best Steve Jobsian tradition, their lips zipped, with half saying they don’t know when a new version is coming out and that the consumer should buy a new phone now.

GoSpotCheck uses a nationwide consumer base to collect local data for companies wanting real-time, on-the-ground information. The data for this infographic was collected from 182 store locations across 27 states by GoSpotCheck’s consumer base.

Enjoy, and we’ll see what happens after one more sleep.
