Samsung Galaxy S3 sales soar as Apple prepares for the new iPhone 5 release date

The iPhone 5 will have a lot of catching up to do with its main competitor, the Samsung Galaxy S3. Earlier today, Samsung announced in a statement, that they have exceeded 20 million in sales in just 100 days with their flagship model. The Galaxy S3 has became the best-selling smartphone in the U.S.

The analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray expects 10 million sales of the iPhone 5 in one week in late September. During the first three days, the iPhone 4S sold over 4 million copies.Today, it was reported that Samsung Galaxy S3 beat the iPhone 4S sales for the last quarter in the U.S. Samsung's numbers speak for themselves: The Koreans have sold 20 million devices in the last 100 days. The Samsung Galaxy S1 took about 17 months to reach the 20 million mark. Its successor, the Galaxy S2, managed the same feat after 10 months. After the launch of the iPhone 4S, Apple sold a total of over 37 million units in the first quarter of 2012. However, this figure includes older iPhone's, and therefore the actual distance between the S3 and 4S sales in the first quarter is very small.

It will be exciting to watch how the sales figures of the Galaxy S3 stack up against the iPhone 5 in the coming months and especially Christmas. Since the price of the Galaxy S3 continues to fall, it may cause more and more Apple fans to submit an interested eye on the potent quad-core machine. Of course, Apple is hoping to change this with the iPhone 5 release date, which should be revealed on Sept. 12th.
