Simon Cowell's 2012 summer breakdown revealed in newly updated book

An updated version of the book "Sweet Revenge: The Intimate Life of Simon Cowell," by Tom Bowers, reveals an event that might shock fans of "American Idol" and "X-Factor": the celebrity had a breakdown over this past summer.

You'll recall that Louis Walsh stepped in for Cowell on the U.S. version of "X Factor" in June of this year. While only for the Kansas auditions, and only - it was reported - because Cowell came down with bronchitis, it appears there was far more to it.

The newly added chapter of the book says that Cowell had actually become "paralysed by tiredness and his immune system had collapsed."

According to Bower's book, Cowell called Walsh, saying:

"I desperately need peace. I'm craving normality. I've got to work out my demons and come out of it."

Walsh was then flown in at the cost of $250,000 to allow Cowell to take a break.

A previous intimate tidbit in the book that caught folks' attention was Cowell's affair with Dannii Minogue.

According to the chapter, Cowell's doctor had also told him to cut out all dietary supplements and cigarettes, as well as taking a break from work. Allegedly, Cowell told Walsh about the instructions:

"I don't want any more tablets or pills. I'm cutting out the lot, including cigarettes. I have to get back to where I was years ago. I had to stop reading texts at three in the morning and making calls later and later. I wanted peace."

Typical of many of these promises, reports are that he's already backslidden and has returned to smoking - and working late at night.

Season two of "The X-Factor" premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 12. It will probably be the second biggest news story of the day. Apple will introduce the iPhone 5 at 10 a.m. PDT that day.
