Apple Announces September 12th Event, iPhone 5 Release Anticipated

iphone 5 event announcement
Consistent rumors of a September 12th Apple release event have proven true, with media invites going out to the press today. The iPhone 5 is expected to be announced — will it be the same as the leaked prototypes we’ve already seen?

Apple has made it official: today, media invites to the mainstream press and top tech blogs were issued by Apple’s PR department today, announcing the San Francisco event on September 12th at 10AM PT. Perhaps most striking is the teaser graphic [above], which clearly shows the shadow of a “5″ under the “12.” Just as we saw with the Worldwide Developers Conference logo in June, Apple’s new style for teaser photos is to be more obvious and less cryptic.

Chances are, the new iPhone will indeed be called the “iPhone 5,” answering a long-held question in the iPhone 5 rumor mill.

This will be new Apple CEO Tim Cook’s fourth event, but his impromptu hosting of the iPhone 4S announcement last year, iPad 3 launch in the spring, and keynote address at the WWDC will pale in comparison to this performance, ushering in what is expected to be the first completely overhauled iPhone iteration since the iPhone 4 release in 2010.

The remaining question is, will the iPhone 5 that Mr. Cook reveals on the 12th be the same one that continues to pop up all over the online tech sphere?

iPhone 5 prototype

Is this the iPhone 5 that Tim Cook will reveal?

Since the now-famed 9to5Mac leak of a longer, thinner iPhone 5 prototype with metal back, we’ve seen a steady parade of parts and photos that all seem to match that first device. The design itself has flummoxed the tech media and iPhone enthusiasts alike: would Apple design an iPhone with a longer screen and aspect ratio, running the risk of fragmenting the app community? Aesthetically, would the metal back of the purported iPhone 5 mismatch in color the way it does in the photos? Most of all, after Tim Cook famously said this year that Apple would “double down” on security, is it possible that Apple could have suffered such a widespread security breach among its components suppliers and assembly partners?

Those questions are bound to get answered next week.

The consensus in the tech media is that the preponderance of evidence is in favor of the iPhone 5 we’ve all already seen as the real thing. However, other still maintain that these purported prototypes could be a ruse to keep the tech media off the trail of the real device, sophisticated fakes being exported out of Asia, or early Apple prototypes that do not necessarily reflect what the finished product will be.

What does seem to be definite, however, is a thinner, larger-screened iPhone 5 with 4G LTE, improved camera, and a metal back of some sort.

iPhone users have been anticipating the iPhone 5 since the summer of 2010. In a week’s time, the wait will finally be over.
