iPhone 5 release date: Apple's future depends on the success of iPhone 5

On Tuesday, it was announced that Apple will unveil the iPhone 5 on Wednesday, Sept. 12th. The iPhone 5 is expected to launch with a new type of display called "in-cell". Specifically, the touch sensors will be included in the same level as the liquid crystal layer. This will slightly reduce the thickness of the smartphone. Apple was granted a patent on this process in August, following a request in June 2007. At least three companies must provide the "in-cell" screen of the iPhone 5: LG, Sharp and Japan Display (alliance of Sony, Toshiba and Hitachi in small screens). However, not Samsung, which used to provide screens for the iPhone and iPad.

In late August, the CEO of LG explained to the Wall Street Journal that mass production began after initially having some problems at startup. LG also takes advantage of the technology for its own smartphones, including the new Optimus G, which integrates an in-cell screen. Sharp, however, had difficulty providing these screens.

According to the most recent reports, Apple has not changed much on the design of the iPhone 5. The change between the iPhone 4/4S and iPhone 5 is minimal. For Henry Blodget, founder of Business Insider, the iPhone 5 looks too much like the iPhone 4S. He says,

"In short, the Galaxy feels like a next-generation phone. The iPhone, meanwhile, looks small and old."

However, Rene Ritchie from the site iMore, takes a different approach. He recalled that Apple designer Jonathan Ive, wants to make the iPhone a timeless object. Meanwhile, the world awaits the iPhone 5 release date and in order for Apple to regain control of the very competitive smartphone industry, the iPhone 5 must be a success.
