iPhone 5 release date: WalMart tests app ahead of new iPhone 5

Will checking out at WalMart get easier after the iPhone 5 release date? It may. According to a September 2 report from The Sydney Morning Herald, the retail giant has tested an iPhone app that could allow you to scan your own purchases with your phone.

This exciting new app could save them plenty in wages, and it could also save you on your groceries. The app is called "Scan & Go," and it could become available sometime after the iPhone 5 release date, which is expected to be September 21. Are all the iPhone 5 leaks tempting you to save up to buy this new phone from Apple later this month?

WalMart spokesman David Tovar said,

"We're continually testing new and innovative ways to serve customers and enhance the shopping experience in our stores."

In a WalMart Supercenter in Rogers, Arkansas WalMart employees who owned iPhones tested out the new app last week. The company is also adding more self checkout lanes to its stores as well. The company spends $12 million every single second on cashier wages, so if it could cut down on this cost, then it could likely bring even greater savings to customers.

Also, an app on the new iPhone 5 and other smartphones could help alleviate the wait time that customers often experience at WalMart. Of course, this new app does not allow you to pay with your phone and skip the checkout altogether, which isn't surprising considering that the iPhone 5 isn't expected to have NFC, which would allow for easy mobile payments.

Do you own an iPhone, or are you planning to buy an iPhone 5 after it's released? If so, could you see using an app at WalMart to scan your own items and make it easier to get out of the store in a timely fashion?
