I am a big fan of Apple products. When I heard about the new release of the iPhone 5, I naturally got excited. I waited for years to get an iPhone and finally bought the iPhone 4 when it came out a few years ago. Of course I love it. I love being able to search online for something while I'm waiting for the kids to get out of school. I love the fact that I can get my emails without crashing the phone. It has been one of the most stable phones I have ever had. Being a stay at home mom of 2 doesn't allow me the ability to get a new phone every couple of years but the inner geek in me can't help but get caught up in the excitement when Apple announces a new iPhone.
I held off on getting the iPhone 4S when it came out even though the inner geek in me really wanted to. I loved how Siri lets you send text messages by recording what you say to to. I love the display. I probably would have loved everything about the iPhone 4S except that I already had a working iPhone 4 and there was no reason to get a new phone. But now the iPhone 5 is rumored to be coming out next week what would I do with my working iPhone 4 if I got the new iPhone 5?
I did some quick research online to see what I can do. I thought about just letting the kids use the iPhone 4 as an iPod but they already have iPods so that was out of the question. I thought about selling it on Ebay but frankly it seemed too much of a hassle. I did find out that you can sell them online. A website called usell.com lets you input the condition of your phone and it will find "buyers" for it. I priced my iPhone 4 out with charger, original box, and manual and found a buyer that will pay me $158. Not bad for something that might just sit in my drawer gathering dust or relagated to the kids toy box as some of our other phones have done.
I saw that many big name companies like Amazon and Best Buy will let you trade in your old phone for a gift card to their store. Some of these places are web-based only but it's worth a look especially if you plan on buying from them sometime soon.
Apple does offer a similar program they called reuse and recycling. The idea is the same. You input your phone's condition and they will tell you how much they will give you in Apple credit. Again this is good if you plan on buying anything from Apple such as those nice new accessories for your iPhone 5. For my iPhone 4 with charger, original box, and manual I would get $135 credit from Apple. It's not as much as I would get from Usell but it might be of better use if you are going to get something from Apple.
While I probably won't be getting the iPhone 5 as soon as it's announced, it is good to know that I have options for my iPhone 4 besides condemming it to a life inside a drawer to gather dust. It deserves better then that.
